When you operate a jewelry boutique, pawn shop, or optical store, standard 2x1 inch thermal labels are useless. You need tags small enough to wrap around a 2mm gold ring band or a pair of sunglass frames without looking bulky or leaving sticky adhesive residue on the merchandise.
The solution is the "Dumbbell" (or Barbell) tag. However, the printable area on these tags is often only 10mm to 15mm wide. If you try to print a standard 12-digit UPC barcode generated by Shopify or Square POS onto a tag this small, the vertical bars bleed together. When you take the ring to the register, the laser scanner completely fails to read it, forcing staff to manually type long SKUs in front of waiting customers.
Standard UPC codes require a lot of physical width to maintain their required quiet zones. Shrinking them to fit a 10mm ring tag causes anti-aliasing blur and total scanner failure.

Dumbbell tags feature two small printable rectangles. The right side should contain the Code 128 barcode. Keep your SKUs short (under 8 characters like `RNG-991`) to ensure the generated bars aren't too tightly packed. For microscopic luxury watches, consider generating a 2D DataMatrix instead of a traditional linear barcode.
Never print jewelry tags on standard Direct Thermal paper. The heat from display case halogens, or the friction of dropping the ring into an ultrasonic cleaner, will cause direct thermal paper to instantly turn jet black. You MUST use a Thermal Transfer printer loaded with polypropylene dumbbell tags and a full-resin ribbon.
Ensure the rat-tail or barbell tags you purchase have "adhesive-free zones" in the center bridge. If the thin strip connecting the two labels contains glue, it will leave a sticky, permanent residue on a 24-karat gold ring or a $500 optical frame, ruining the product presentation.
