Internal E-Commerce Inventory

Free SKU Barcode Generator

Turn your internal product codes into scannable inventory tags. Upload your Shopify or WooCommerce export and use our bulk workspace to print thousands of custom SKU labels instantly.

What is a SKU vs. a UPC?

This is the most common point of confusion for new e-commerce sellers. Using the wrong barcode format internally will break your inventory system and lead to scanning failures.

SKU (Stock Keeping Unit)

An internal code created by your business. You don't buy them. They usually contain letters and hyphens (e.g., SHIRT-RED-L). You must use Code-128 to turn these into barcodes.

UPC (Universal Product Code)

A globally recognized 12-digit number purchased from GS1. Used strictly for selling products in major retail chains. It contains only numbers.

TSHIRT-RED-L

Code-128 is the Standard

Our generator natively encodes alphanumeric SKUs into crisp, scalable Code-128 vectors for flawless inventory scanning.

The Workflow

How to print barcodes from Shopify or WooCommerce

If you have hundreds of product variants, typing them manually is a waste of time. Automate it in 4 simple steps.

1

Export Inventory

Go to your e-commerce platform and export your product variants as a CSV file. Ensure you have columns for SKU and Title.

2

Upload & Map

Drag the file into our workspace. Our system will automatically read your columns. Select Code-128 as the symbology.

3

Configure Size

Enter the exact physical dimensions of your label roll (e.g., 50x30mm) so the barcodes scale perfectly without blurring.

4

Export & Print

Click Export PDF Roll. We compile a high-res document that you can send directly to your Zebra or Rollo thermal printer.

Why Proper Internal Labeling Matters

Printing and applying physical SKU labels to your products solves three major logistical headaches for growing e-commerce brands:

  • Eliminates Mis-Picks: When a warehouse worker looks at a shelf full of black t-shirts, they cannot tell a Medium from a Large just by looking. Scanning the SKU barcode guarantees they pick the exact variant the customer ordered.
  • Speeds Up Receiving: When a new shipment arrives from your manufacturer, your team can scan the applied barcodes to instantly update the inventory counts in your Shopify dashboard.
  • Enables 3PL Integration: If you eventually outsource your fulfillment to a third-party logistics company, they will require every single item to arrive with a scannable barcode already attached.

SKU Generator FAQs

What is the difference between a SKU and a UPC?

A UPC is a globally recognized 12-digit number purchased from GS1 for retail stores. A SKU is an internal code created by your business to track inventory. SKUs can contain letters, numbers, and hyphens.

Can I print barcodes directly from my Shopify or WooCommerce export?

Yes! Export your Inventory CSV from your platform and upload it into our workspace. Our system reads the Variant SKU column, allowing you to generate labels for your entire catalog instantly without manual entry.

Which barcode format should I choose for internal SKUs?

We highly recommend Code-128. Because most internal SKUs contain letters and hyphens (like TSHIRT-RED-XL), Code-128 is the most reliable format. It scales perfectly and is readable by all modern scanners. UPC will reject letters.

What size should my SKU labels be?

For general warehouse inventory and apparel, 50x30mm (approx 2x1.2 inches) is the industry standard. It provides enough room for a scannable barcode and a human-readable product title above it.

Is this a completely free online barcode generator?

Yes, for single labels and small batch testing, our tool is 100% free to use. If you are scaling up and need to export massive Excel files (up to 75,000 SKUs) to a continuous PDF roll, we offer affordable premium plans.
