EAN-8 Barcode
Bulk Label Generator

Maximize your product real estate. Learn how to format high-density 8-digit retail labels, auto-calculate check digits, and generate print-ready batches instantly.

When standard EAN-13 barcodes destroy your packaging lines.

If you are launching a product line with slim packages—like cosmetics containers, luxury vaping vials, or compact health bars—label space is at a critical premium. Forcing a full-size EAN-13 barcode onto these designs often eats up over 25% of your packaging space, leaving little room for brand elements or regulatory data.

When operations teams try to bypass this by scaling down an EAN-13 code horizontally, point-of-sale laser scanners fail to read the squeezed bars. The EAN-8 symbology provides the precise solution. By condensing the payload down to 8 total digits, it shrinks the physical layout footprint while maintaining global checkout compliance.

Choosing Your Retail Footprint

How does the 8-digit format hold up against alternative point-of-sale identifiers? Check the criteria below.

EAN-13

The mainstream international retail standard. It requires a mandatory 13-digit sequence, making it perfectly functional for large and medium products but incompatible with mini items.

  • Width: 37.29mm Standard
  • Data Limit: 13 Digits
  • Range: Global Retail
Space Optimizer

EAN-8

A highly optimized, condensed retail matrix. It cuts down the horizontal width considerably, making it the mandated global configuration for small cosmetics, medical devices, and hardware items.

  • Width: 26.73mm Standard
  • Data Limit: 8 Digits
  • Structure: Country Prefix + Item + Check

UPC-E

The compressed zero-suppressed format used primarily in North America. Perfect for small items inside the US and Canada, but maps differently to global international nodes.

  • Width: 22.11mm Standard
  • Data Limit: 6 Digits (Zero Suppressed)
  • Range: Primarily North America

Deploying Bulk EAN-8 Label Spools

If you are updating product manifests across extensive databases, don't write each line out manually. Use our Excel spreadsheet integrator to automate formatting.

1. Sanitize the CSV Columns

Isolate your 7-digit base strings inside Excel or Google Sheets. Ensure you drop any blank spaces or character padding, then export the sheet as a clean CSV file.

2. Map into Local RAM

Drop your file straight into our main compiler workspace. Because the rendering process executes completely inside your local browser memory, you won't encounter network lag or API gateway timeouts.

3. Spool the Vector Roll

Compile the batch into a continuous, vector-grade PDF document. This lets you spool thousands of labels cleanly onto specialized high-resolution thermal hardware without blurry edges.

EAN-8 Architecture FAQs

What is an EAN-8 barcode used for?
An EAN-8 barcode is a compressed global retail identifier used on small items where a standard 13-digit EAN-13 barcode would occupy too much physical space on the label (such as cosmetics, cigarettes, small electronics, or chewing gum).
How is the EAN-8 check digit calculated?
EAN-8 uses the standard GS1 Modulo-10 calculation. Digits in odd positions are multiplied by 3, while digits in even positions are multiplied by 1. The total sum is subtracted from the next highest multiple of 10 to yield the 8th digit checker.
Can I convert an EAN-13 barcode directly into an EAN-8 format?
No. You cannot truncate or shrink an EAN-13 sequence into an EAN-8 code yourself. Because EAN-8 identifiers are drawn from a separate, highly limited global pool, you must request an explicit EAN-8 prefix structure directly from your regional GS1 registry.
