Stop losing visibility on Google Shopping. Learn exactly when you need a UPC, how to use the "Does not apply" exception for vintage goods, and how to format internal SKUs to organize your eBay warehouse.
Unlike Amazon, which forces every seller into a rigid FBA barcode system, eBay serves two very different types of sellers: brands selling mass-produced new goods, and individuals selling vintage, handmade, or bundled items. This duality causes massive confusion around GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) requirements.
If you sell a new iPhone and fail to provide the official UPC, eBay will not link your listing to the eBay Catalog. Worse, Google Shopping algorithms will outright reject your listing for missing product identifiers, stripping you of thousands of external organic views. However, forcing a fake UPC onto a custom bundle is equally penalized.
Used for new, branded items. Pushes your listing to the top of Google Shopping and groups your product under eBay's official reviews.
Used alongside "Does not apply". An internal alphanumeric code (e.g., VINTAGE-TEE-01) printed as a Code 128 barcode for your own warehouse shelves.
Stop guessing what goes in the Product Identifiers field. Follow these three rules to maximize your listing SEO and prevent warehouse fulfillment errors.
If the item you are selling has a manufacturer's barcode stamped on the box, you must input that exact UPC, EAN, or ISBN into the listing. Do not generate your own. eBay uses this to inject stock photos, item specifics, and push the data directly into Google's merchant feed.
If you sell antiques, custom 3D-printed items, handmade crafts, or custom bundles (e.g., a camera sold with aftermarket lenses), no official GS1 GTIN exists. You must explicitly select "Does not apply" in the GTIN field. Never buy a cheap, recycled UPC from a reseller to fill this box; eBay cross-references the GS1 database and will demote your listing.
For items without a GTIN, you still need a way to find them in your warehouse. Use eBay's Custom Label (SKU) field. You can type an alphanumeric code (like "BIN-A-012") into eBay, generate a Code 128 barcode using our tools, and stick it to the physical item. When an order drops, simply scan the bin to verify the pick.
Toggle between generating a standard retail GTIN (UPC) for catalog matching, and an alphanumeric Custom Label (Code 128) for your internal warehouse tracking.
