Standard UPCs cannot hold expiration dates or variable weights. Learn how the GS1 DataBar symbology encodes dynamic data into a microscopic footprint for loose produce, meat, and coupons.
If you sell packaged cereal, a standard UPC-A barcode is perfect. It statically tells the point-of-sale scanner, "This is cereal." But if you sell fresh chicken breast or loose apples, every single package is unique. They weigh different amounts, have varying prices, and possess strict expiration dates.
Previously, this required messy workaround labels. GS1 DataBar (formerly RSS-14) solves this entirely. It is a family of highly compressed 1D barcodes that utilize Application Identifiers (AIs) to pack dynamic variables—like weight and expiration dates—into a footprint small enough to fit on a single apple sticker.
GS1 DataBar relies on Application Identifiers (AIs)—short numeric prefixes in parentheses that tell the scanner exactly what kind of data is following.
Unlike a generic barcode, the DataBar Expanded format strings together multiple pieces of information into a single scannable line. When a cashier scans the meat package, the POS system reads the string, separates the data blocks based on the AIs, calculates the final price based on the weight, and verifies the product hasn't expired.
Global Trade Item Number (GTIN): This identifies the actual product (e.g., Organic Chicken Breast). It is always exactly 14 digits long.
Net Weight in Kilograms: The "x" dictates the decimal point. For example, (3103) followed by 001500 means the item weighs 1.500 kg.
Best Before Date: A strict 6-digit format representing YYMMDD. For example, (15)261231 tells the system the product expires on Dec 31, 2026.
The Coupon Advantage
Because DataBar can hold so much variable data in a tiny space, it is also the global standard for complex manufacturer coupons. It allows brands to encode rules like "Buy 2 Get 1 Free" directly into the barcode, stopping cashier fraud entirely.
Input your variables below. Our client-side engine will format the Application Identifiers (AIs) correctly and render a true GS1 DataBar Expanded vector.
