When you purchase an ISBN from Bowker (US) or Nielsen (UK), you are buying a number (e.g., 978-0-123456-47-2). You are not buying a barcode. Many first-time authors are tricked into paying an extra $25 to $50 just to get an image of their barcode to put on their book's back cover.
Furthermore, if you intend to sell physical copies in a traditional brick-and-mortar bookstore (like Barnes & Noble), the 13-digit ISBN alone is not enough. Retail point-of-sale (POS) systems require a second, smaller barcode next to the ISBN that encodes the book's retail price.
The main barcode. Modern ISBNs start with 978 or 979 (the GS1 prefix for "Bookland"). Mathematically, an ISBN-13 is just an EAN-13 barcode.
A smaller 5-digit barcode appended to the right. It tells the cashier's scanner the exact retail currency and price of the book.
If you are handing off a PDF to a cover designer or uploading to Amazon KDP, ensure your barcode architecture follows these strict publishing standards.
When you receive your ISBN, it will look like this: `978-1-234567-89-0`. A barcode engine cannot read hyphens. Before generating your EAN-13 barcode, you must strip all dashes to create a pure 13-digit numeric string: `9781234567890`.
If you need the 5-digit price add-on, the first digit represents the currency (5 = USD, 6 = CAD, 0/1 = GBP). The last four digits are the price without decimals. For a book priced at $24.99 USD, your EAN-5 code is `52499`. If your price is over $99.99, use the code `59999`. If you do not want to set a fixed price, use `90000`.
Book covers are printed at high resolution (300 DPI minimum). If you download a low-resolution JPG or PNG barcode and stretch it in Photoshop, the edges of the bars will blur (anti-aliasing). This will cause the laser scanner at the bookstore checkout to fail. Always export your barcode as a pure Vector (SVG or PDF).
