If a stock clerk needs to scan a physical shelf to update an inventory location in the ERP, using a standard retail barcode creates a data collision with actual products.

The solution is the MSI Plessey symbology. Developed by the MSI Data Corporation, this format is the undisputed global standard for shelf-edge labeling. It uses continuous, numeric-only data structures paired with highly customizable check digits (Mod 10 or Mod 11) to ensure optical scanners never misread a bin location, even if the label is scratched or faded.

The Anatomy of MSI Plessey

Why do inventory systems rely on MSI instead of modern alternatives? It comes down to flexibility and checksum security.

Variable Length

Unlike retail barcodes (UPC/EAN) which have fixed lengths of 12 or 13 digits, MSI Plessey can be any length. This allows warehouses to encode short aisle numbers (e.g., 04) or long multi-tier bin identifiers (e.g., 040912).

1. Extract Bin Logic

Export your shelf and bin mapping architecture from your WMS/ERP. Ensure all identifiers contain strictly numbers (0-9). Save the sheet as a CSV file.

2. Select the Algorithm
