While products themselves use UPC or EAN barcodes, the physical infrastructure of a supermarket or 3PL warehouse requires a different system. If a stock clerk needs to scan a physical shelf to update an inventory location in the ERP, using a standard retail barcode creates a data collision with actual products.

Unlike retail barcodes (UPC/EAN) which have fixed lengths of 12 or 13 digits, MSI Plessey can be any length. This allows warehouses to encode short aisle numbers (e.g., 04) or long multi-tier bin identifiers (e.g., 040912).
MSI provides ultimate security flexibility. Depending on your ERP requirements, you can configure it to use a Modulo 10, Modulo 11, or even a double-check system (Mod 1010 or Mod 1110) to eliminate misreads on dusty shelves.
MSI is strictly a numeric symbology (0-9). If your warehouse architecture relies on alphanumeric aisle codes (like "Aisle-C"), you must transition to a Code 128 format instead.
