SSCC Barcodes Explained:
The Pallet Labeling Guide

Scaling up to LTL freight for Amazon FBA or Walmart WFS? Learn the mathematics behind the 18-digit Serial Shipping Container Code and generate compliant GS1-128 pallet license plates instantly.

The "License Plate" of global shipping.

When your e-commerce brand scales beyond shipping individual UPS boxes and begins sending Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) or Full-Truckload (FTL) pallets to 3PL warehouses, standard UPC or ITF-14 barcodes are no longer enough.

A pallet might contain 50 master cartons of mixed products. A warehouse receiver cannot break down the pallet to scan 50 individual boxes. They need a single, scannable "License Plate" on the outside of the shrink wrap that digitally transmits the exact contents of the entire pallet via an ASN (Advanced Shipping Notice). This is the SSCC.

ITF-14 (Master Carton)

Identifies a box containing a specific quantity of the exact same product. (e.g., A box of 24 blue shirts).

SSCC (Pallet/Logistics Unit)

A unique 18-digit identifier for a specific physical pallet, regardless of what mix of products are wrapped inside it.

The Anatomy of the 18-Digit SSCC

The Serial Shipping Container Code is strictly regulated by GS1. It consists of 18 digits, always preceded by the Application Identifier (00) when printed as a GS1-128 barcode.

1

The Extension Digit (1 Digit)

The very first digit of the SSCC (ranging from 0 to 9) is chosen freely by the company assembling the pallet. It is simply used to increase the total capacity of unique serial numbers available to your company.

2

GS1 Prefix & Serial Ref (16 Digits)

The next block of numbers is your official GS1 Company Prefix (which proves your company owns the freight), followed immediately by a sequential Serial Reference number that you assign to that specific pallet. Together, these two elements total 16 digits.

3

Modulo 10 Check Digit (1 Digit)

The final 18th digit is mathematically calculated from the previous 17 digits using the Modulo 10 algorithm. This ensures that if a forklift damages the label or the laser scanner misreads a bar, the system immediately recognizes the error and rejects the scan.

SSCC & Freight Logistics FAQs

What is an SSCC barcode?
An SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code) is an 18-digit number used to identify logistics units, such as pallets or air cargo containers. It acts as a "license plate" for a shipment, allowing supply chains to track massive freight globally without scanning individual items.
What is the difference between ITF-14 and SSCC?
An ITF-14 identifies a specific trade item grouping (e.g., a master carton containing 24 identical bottles of shampoo). An SSCC identifies a unique physical logistics unit (e.g., Pallet #12345) which might contain a mixed assortment of different ITF-14 cartons.
How is an SSCC barcode structured?
The SSCC is 18 digits long. It starts with an Extension Digit, followed by your GS1 Company Prefix, a Serial Reference number, and a Modulo-10 Check Digit. In a barcode graphic, it is always preceded by the GS1 Application Identifier (00).
