Walmart WFS Logistics:
GTIN & Barcode Rules

Migrating your inventory from Amazon to Walmart? Stop getting your pallets rejected at the receiving dock. Master Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) strict GTIN requirements and generate compliant labels instantly.

The great Amazon FBA migration trap.

As sellers diversify their revenue streams, thousands are shipping inventory directly from their Amazon 3PLs into Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS). However, they are making one catastrophic error: leaving the Amazon FNSKU barcode on the product.

Walmart operates on a fundamentally different philosophy than Amazon. While Amazon relies on internal, proprietary barcodes (FNSKUs) to track seller inventory, Walmart strictly enforces global retail standards. Walmart's automated sorters expect a standard GS1 GTIN (UPC or EAN). If they scan an Amazon FNSKU, your inventory will be flagged, delayed, or outright rejected.

Amazon FNSKU (Rejected by WFS)

A proprietary barcode starting with "X00". Walmart scanners cannot read this format. Result: Inventory Delayed or Rejected.

Walmart Standard (WFS Compliant)

A 100% scannable UPC / EAN (GTIN) or a designated WFS Item Label, with all competitor barcodes completely covered by opaque thermal paper.

The 3 Rules of WFS Compliance

If you are shipping pallets or parcels to a Walmart fulfillment center, your item-level and case-level labeling must adhere to these parameters.

1

The GTIN Mandate (UPC/EAN)

Unlike Amazon, Walmart requires almost all products to have a universal GTIN. Your product packaging must clearly display a 12-digit UPC-A or 13-digit EAN-13 barcode. This barcode must match the GTIN you submitted when creating your Walmart listing.

2

The "One Barcode Only" Rule

Walmart warehouses use multi-directional scanners. If a box has a UPC on the front and an Amazon FNSKU or old manufacturer label on the back, the scanner will crash. You must use opaque, matte thermal labels to cover any competing barcodes. Only ONE scannable barcode should be visible per sellable unit.

3

WFS Item Labels (The Alternative)

If your product does not have a UPC printed on the box, or if you need to cover up an Amazon label, you must print a WFS Item Label. This is a specific sticker format that includes your product's GTIN (formatted as a barcode), the product name, and the seller name.

Walmart WFS Barcode FAQs

Can I use an Amazon FNSKU barcode at Walmart WFS?
Absolutely not. Walmart fulfillment centers will reject any inventory bearing an Amazon FNSKU barcode. Walmart requires a standard global GTIN (UPC or EAN). If your product arrives with an FNSKU, it must be completely covered by a valid WFS Item Label.
Do I need a UPC to sell on Walmart Marketplace?
Yes, in almost all cases. Walmart is extremely strict about utilizing global GS1 standards. Every product variant must have a valid GTIN (UPC or EAN). While Walmart occasionally grants GTIN exemptions for private label goods, standard retail products must possess a verifiable UPC.
What is the difference between a WFS Item Label and a UPC?
A UPC is the universal GS1 barcode used at retail checkouts globally. A WFS Item Label is a specific routing sticker generated by Walmart (or a 3rd party tool) that contains the UPC formatted physically along with Walmart-specific routing text. You only need to apply a WFS Item Label if the manufacturer's original UPC is missing, unscannable, or needs to cover an Amazon FNSKU.
