The crippling cost of a bad label.

Modern automotive assembly lines operate on strict Just-in-Time (JIT) manufacturing principles. When a truck backs into the receiving dock at a Ford, GM, or Honda plant, automated optical scanners sweep the pallets. If your shipping label cannot be read instantly, the entire supply chain halts.

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have zero tolerance for labeling errors. If your label misplaces a Data Identifier, uses a non-compliant font, or stretches a barcode out of ratio, you will be hit with a "Debit Memo" (chargeback)—often costing hundreds or thousands of dollars per incorrectly labeled pallet.

Naked Data Strings

Encoding raw text like `7829-PART` into the barcode. The OEM's scanner reads it, but the database doesn't know if it's a part number, a serial number, or a quantity. Result: Rejected.

Prefixed Data Identifiers (DIs)

Encoding `P7829-PART`. The scanner detects the prefixed "P", strips it out automatically, and instantly routes the string "7829-PART" to the Parts column in the ERP.

The 3 Pillars of AIAG Labeling

The Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) sets rigid standards for B-10 and B-16 compliance. Follow these rules to guarantee EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) success.

Mandatory Data Identifiers (DIs)

Every barcode on the label must begin with a designated letter to declare its data type. The standard DIs include: P (Customer Part Number), Q (Quantity), V (Vendor/Supplier Code), and S (Unique Serial Number). When generating your barcode, the DI must be encoded in the bars, but is often visually separated in human-readable text (e.g., `(P) 12345`).

Code 39 vs. Code 128 Transition

Historically, the AIAG mandated Code 39. However, Code 39 is inefficient for long alphanumeric strings and often causes the barcode to print wider than the 4-inch label boundary, causing scanners to fail. The industry is rapidly shifting to Code 128, which compresses alphanumeric data into a much denser, safer footprint.

The Stacked Grid Layout

An AIAG B-10 label is traditionally 4x6 inches and broken into distinct horizontal and vertical blocks. The Part Number barcode is always at the top, prominently displayed. Quantity, Supplier, and Serial barcodes are stacked beneath it. Misaligning these blocks, or printing with low-res dithering, will trigger automatic rejection.

What is the difference between AIAG B-10 and AIAG B-16 labels?
AIAG B-10 is the Trading Partner Label standard used primarily in North America for tracking individual part containers and master pallets. B-16 is the Global Transport Label (GTL) standard, which attempts to harmonize international shipping data into a single, global format, often utilizing PDF417 or 2D DataMatrix alongside traditional 1D barcodes.
Why do automotive barcodes have random letters at the start of the code?
Those are Data Identifiers (DIs). In the automotive industry, an automated scanner needs to know what it is looking at without human input. A "P" indicates the following string is the Part Number. A "Q" indicates Quantity. A "V" indicates the Vendor Code. The scanner strips these prefix letters out during database processing.
Does the automotive industry use Code 39 or Code 128?
Historically, the AIAG standard mandated Code 39. However, as part numbers grew longer, Code 39 labels became too wide to physically fit on 4x6 labels. The industry has largely transitioned to Code 128 because it is significantly denser, allowing longer alphanumeric strings to fit on standard thermal paper.
